Prior to travel, you must apply for an ETA "Electronic Travel Authority". For short-term visits under 3 months, apply for an eVisitor 651 for free. This allows multiple entries into Australia (for up to 3 months at a time) over a 12-month period. There are also a wide range of longer visas + working holiday visas. Find out what visa you specifically need here.

You will require an adaptor to suit Type I. Their standard voltage is 230V.
Credit Cards / Banks
Australian banks commonly charge your card every time you take cash out. Try to limit your cash withdrawal using a travel credit card with 0% charges for international use. We used our 'Halifax Clarity Credit Card'. Just be sure to pay it off on-time each month, as this benefits comes with a higher interest on unpaid balances.
• Book a mixture of 'billy basic' and the odd 'luxury' accommodation. This gives you something to look forward to and gives you a well needed break in between hostels!
• If going self-catering, book private accommodation with cooking facilities (or at least a microwave or hob!) and washing facilities. Most hostels have these as shared facilities.
• When travelling a 12-hour Greyhound bus ride, book an overnight time slot. This will coincide with being able to sleep, as well as saving on a night's accommodation!
